Back Pain Got You Down? Your Problem Could Be A Herniated Disc

Back pain is a fairly common occurrence among people all over the world. Since it is so common, it is easy to overlook the cause of back pain and just treat it with general painkillers.

BUT WHAT IF THE CAUSE OF YOUR BACK PAIN IS A HERNIATED DISC?

Typically, herniated discs cause great discomfort and pain in the lumbar spine or the lower part of your backbone. And the worst part about it is that it can slowly spread from your lumbar spine to your thighs, buttocks, and even calves. Even if you are resting or do as much as sneeze, there are chances that you are going to experience pain.

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU HAVE A HERNIATED DISC?

To understand what a herniated disc actually is, you need to understand a bit more about your spinal discs.

Spinal discs act as shock absorbents, distributing various loads on our back evenly while we are walking, jogging, sitting, etc. Each of these discs is made up of a soft inner ring and a tough outer ring. Now it’s all well and good till these both layers are intact, but it’s when the outer ring is injured when the problem starts.

When the outer ring of the disc is damaged, the inner disc consequently protrudes outward, causing pain. While the most common cause due to which this phenomenon can occur is leading a sedentary lifestyle, being overweight or having weak muscles due to age can also make you prone to a herniated disc.

The best way to find this out is to pay a visit to your physician and get yourself examined.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF A HERNIATED DISC?

Some of the common symptoms which can indicate that it is time to pay a visit to your physician are:

  •  Pain in the arms and legs
  •  Numbness in the back or tingling of the extremities
  •  Weakness in legs or stumbling frequently

HOW CAN PILATES HELP?

Most of the physicians work on the cause of your pain and then work to keep it from coming back. Hence, one of their most recommended forms of movement is Pilates.

The exercises taught in Pilates are built around the idea that if you want to be truly free from pain, you need to have a balance in your body and treat the condition from its very core.

Pilates focuses on core stability, flexibility, and muscle-strengthening which provides proper support to the spine. All of this will ultimately combine to not just relieve you of the pain but ensure long-term sustenance of the same state.
