The Fletcher Pilates Legacy
Here at PAD, we’re huge fans of Fletcher Pilates, and here’s why: Ron Fletcher, the brilliant mind behind this unique approach, wasn’t just about exercise – he was about expression. As a protégé of Joseph and Clara Pilates, Fletcher took the original method and infused it with the grace and fluidity of dance. The result? A dynamic, transformative workout that’s as energizing as it is effective.
Fletcher’s journey began in the late 1940s when he sought treatment for a chronic knee injury at Joseph Pilates’ New York City studio. This encounter sparked a 20-year mentorship that would revolutionize the Pilates world. In 1972, Fletcher opened the first Pilates studio on the West Coast, bringing this innovative method to Hollywood’s elite and helping to catalyze its global popularity.
Fletcher’s approach to Pilates, now known as Fletcher Pilates®, incorporated elements of dance and movement into the equipment-based structure of Joseph Pilates’ original method. He introduced innovations such as Fletcher Floorwork® and Towelwork, which allowed Pilates to be practiced without specialized equipment, making it more accessible and contributing significantly to its widespread adoption.
